The advantages and disadvantages of different materials of protective gloves.
1. What are the materials of protective gloves?
There are 8 types of common materials for protective gloves:
- Leather: mainly pig skin, cowhide, sheepskin, artificial skin, artificial leather.
- Rubber: mainly rubber, natural latex, nitrile rubber.
- Fabric: mainly knitted fabric, canvas, functional fabric, and accessories.
- Thread: mainly cotton yarn, nylon thread, high elastic silk, low elastic silk.
- Plastic paper: mainly PE, PPA.
- Adding materials: mainly cotton, sponge, steel wire, anti-gas material, anti-slip material, fireproof material, shock-proof material.
- Chemical materials: zinc oxide, antioxidant, sulfur, pigment, potassium hydroxide, calcium bicarbonate, etc.
- Chemical materials: here refers to liquid gloves.
2. The advantages and disadvantages of different materials of protective gloves.
Commonly used protective gloves can be divided into: natural latex, nitrile rubber, natural rubber, PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PVA (the surface is coated with PVA), polybutadiene rubber, butyl rubber, leather, cloth and so on. So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of different materials of protective gloves?
- Natural latex
- Advantages: It has non-slip grip, heat insulation, tear resistance, puncture resistance, wear resistance and cutting resistance, and it has a good protective effect on water-based chemical products (such as acid and alkali water solutions), and it is comfortable and elastic to wear, so it is often used in oil-free working environments.
- Disadvantages: The protection of organic solvents is not good enough, and it is not resistant to oil, and it may lead to allergies in some people, because some users will be allergic to milk protein.
- Nitrile butadiene rubber
- Advantages: This is the most common material in protective gloves, not only to prevent grease (including animal fat), xylene, polyethylene and aliphatic solvent erosion, but also waterproof seepage, can resist acid, alkali and alcohol solvents, with high wear resistance, good heat resistance, low surface chemical residue, good flexibility, good sensitivity and other advantages.
- Disadvantages: can not resist most ketones, aromatic chemicals, can not be used in high temperature workplaces, and can not be used as insulation gloves.
- Natural rubber
- Advantages: Effective protection of alkali, alcohol and a variety of chemically diluted aqueous solutions (such as dilute acid and dilute alkali), can better prevent the penetration of aldehydes and ketones. So it is often used to clean utensils and instruments
- Disadvantages: Poor protection against oils and organic compounds, and lack of flexibility and sensitivity when wearing gloves.
- PVC
- Advantages: Has a strong chemical corrosion resistance, and a large number of water machine solvent chemicals (such as acids, alkalis, amines, peroxides, etc.) have a protective effect.
- Disadvantages: It does not have a protective effect on organic solvents, and if pvc gloves are used in organic solvents, the plasticizer in the gloves will dissolve out, so that chemicals can quickly penetrate the hands. If pvc gloves are used at high temperatures, it will cause the gloves to decompose and produce vinyl chloride (VCM).
- PVA
- Advantages: Has good chemical resistance, scratch resistance and wear resistance, while aliphatic, aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, fluorocarbons and most ketones (except acetone), esters and ethers and other organic chemicals play an effective protective role.
- Disadvantages: When in contact with water, it will be quickly decomposed by water, so do not use it in water or water-based solutions.
- Neoprene rubber
- Advantages: It has a good protective effect on petrochemical products, anti-slip agents, acids, alkalis, hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols and other substances, so it is widely used in chemical and petrochemical industries.
- Disadvantages: Cold resistance is relatively poor, so it is not suitable for use in low temperature operating environments.
- Butyl rubber
- Advantages: It not only protects substances such as acetone, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, but also has excellent resistance to acids and oxidation-reduction solutions other than strong oxidizing concentrated acids, so it is more suitable for dealing with toxic substances.
- Disadvantages: The protection effect of non-polar solvents is not good.
- Cloth
- Advantages: Can prevent medium and low mechanical wear, thick version of the cloth gloves can be used for heat, cold resistance, so more suitable for utensils heating and other operations.
- Disadvantages: Can only be used for general protection, must not be used for chemical protection.
- Leather
- Advantages: Cold, heat, spark splash, wear, cutting, piercing has a certain protective effect, mechanical wear resistance is also good, if it is thick leather gloves, you can prevent heat, if in the outer layer of aluminum plating, you can prevent high temperature and thermal radiation. Therefore, it is often used in liquid nitrogen operation, welding operations and other occasions.
- Disadvantages: Can only be used for general protection, must not be used for chemical protection.
